A Good Record Store

Average: 4.9 (31 votes)

i love the entire experience of a true record store, whether you're in omaha, nebraska, or in chapel hill, north carolina or san diego, california...the minute you step into the store you're taken to a timeless place, the boundaries and possibilities honestly feel endless when you're walking around the store, smelling the old vinyl records, and seeing a cracked old copy of nirvana's "in-utero" cd in the used section (probably the copy my mom took back to the store when i brought it home and she saw the song title "rape me" on the back...oh man that made me so angry, only made me want to like it more!) anyways, all the senses are involved at a good record store, you just automatically feel cooler there, i think for a lot of kids and even adults its a kind of treehouse club or some sort of refuge from the dullness of the real world, and the feeling of grappling with the stupid hard to open packaging of a cd is so enthralling...you can't get into your car fast enough to pop it into your cd player and hear the first note! it could be your favorite record and you dont even know it yet! and with vinyl, the IDEA of getting home and putting on the record is beyond exciting...basically, yes i love going to a good record store haha..one of my favorite spots is LOU'S records in leucadia, california (san diego), my hometown record store, it's got everything you'd want or need and i love it.

hi dan!
i live in turkey.. i am very happy because i meet augustana .... i love dan...
your songs are great goodnight everyone....

Dear Ann Landers,

I am a sailor in the New Zealand Navy.

My parents live in the suburb of Seatoun and one of my sisters, who lives in Palmerston North, is married to an Australian.

My Father and Mother have recently been arrested for growing and selling marijuana, distribution of Cocaine, as well as Heroin.

They are currently dependent on my two sisters, who are prostitutes in Auckland.

I have two brothers, one who is currently serving a non parole life sentence in Mt. Eden Prison, Auckland, for the rape & murder of a teenage boy in 1994, the other currently being
held in the Wellington remand center on charges of incest with his three children.

I have recently become engaged to marry a former Thai prostitute who lives in Christchurch and indeed is still a
part time "working girl" in a Brothel, however, her time there is limited as she has recently been infected with an STD.

We intend to marry as soon as possible and are currently looking into the possibility of opening our own brothel with my fiancee utilizing her knowledge of the industry working as the Madam.

I am hoping my two sisters would be interested in joining our team. Although I would prefer them not to prostitute
themselves, at least it would get them off the streets and hopefully the heroin.

My problem is this: I love my fiancee and look forward to bringing her into the family and of course I want to be totally honest with her.

So, how should I tell her about my brother-in-law being employed by Microsoft?

if not THE most fun tour we've ever been on. Every single nike shoes website person on the tour was genuinely amazing, and that made it a really incredible experience every night... it also helped that all the bands were so encouraging of each other, and it was fun to kind of interweave everyone's sets by having each other join in on each other's songs.

i wanna hold the cd in my hands and read the booklet...
i know, it's really old-fashioned, but that's me. even if i'm only 21 years old and all of my friends can't understand it^Nice article, very helpful. Thanks!

Three days after his inauguration, on January 23, 2009, President Barack Obama ordered US predator drones to attack sites inside of Pakistan, reportedly killing 15 people. It was the first documented attack ordered by the new US Commander in Chief inside of Pakistan. Since that first Obama-authorized attack, the US has regularly bombed Pakistan, killing scores of civilians mortgage loan. The New York Times reported that the attacks were clear evidence Obama “is continuing, and in some cases extending, Bush administration policy.” In the first 99 days of 2009, more than 150 people were reportedly killed in these drone attacks. The most recent documented attack was reportedly last Thursday in Waziristan. Since 2006, the US drone strikes have killed 687 people (as of April). That amounts to about 38 deaths a month just from drone attacks bad credit loan.

The use of these attack drones by Obama should not come as a surprise to anyone who followed his presidential campaign closely. As a candidate, Obama made clear that Pakistan’s sovereignty was subservient to US interests, saying he would attack with or without the approval of the Pakistani government. Obama said if the US had “actionable intelligence” that “high value” targets were in Pakistan, the US would attack. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, echoed those sentiments on the campaign trail and “did not rule out U.S. attacks inside Pakistan, citing the missile attacks her husband, then-President Bill Clinton, ordered against Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan in 1998. ‘If we had actionable intelligence that Osama bin Laden or other high-value targets were in Pakistan I would ensure that they were targeted and killed or captured debt management,’ she said.”

Last weekend, Obama granted his first extended interview with a Pakistani media outlet, the newspaper Dawn:

Responding to a question about drone attacks inside Pakistan’s tribal zone, Mr Obama said he did not comment on specific operations property search.

‘But I will tell you that we have no intention of sending US troops into Pakistan. Pakistan and its military are dealing with their security issues.’

What a great show at the Count Basie theatre in RED BANK. I came to see the Counting Crows but was much more impressed with your set. Bought your CD "CAN'T LOVE" which is terrific. Only wish the theatre also sold your other CD as well. Hoping to see you back in NJ soon. You guys are very talented. Keep working hard. You are headed for much success.

Dan - Found your site from the Counting Crow's tour site; I wish I bought tix to your tour - sounds amazing. I grew up with Lou's Records myself -- it is by far my fav record store; I haven't found another like it. Makes me miss all the great things in Leucadia (Lou's, VGs, the Pannikin, Grandview etc).

Guys, you were unbelievable last night! I am sorry to say I had never heard your music before last night at Nokia in Dallas, but will be looking for your music from now on! We were so excited to see the Crows last night (who I've loved for years) and VERY pleasantly surprised to hear you play as well. Thank you for the pleasure of listening to your amazing tunes! Good luck to you!

I love you guys, but when are we gonna see you here in the midwest?? Chicago is a great city, why don't you come and see? When is next new cd coming out? Maybe if you performed here you could get a little more air time on the local stations!!

I absolutley loved your performance at the Greek Theatre last night, and I can't stop thinking about you guys and how successful you will become very soon. I can't believe you just jumped in there with Adam Duritz and Counting Crows and pretty much up-staged them. I've been a huge Counting Crows fan ever since August and Everything After. I had never even heard of your band, but came to see Michael Franti and the Counting Crows. I recognized your songs from the radio, which are great, but your live performance was amazing. I was so moved by your music and your melodies. Even at such a huge venue I felt like you guys were singing right to me, and no one ever missed a beat. I thought you were all completely talented and gracious, and your enthusiasm was infectious. All of you have great stage presence, led of course by Dan Layus, whose name I never even knew before last night. Thanks for giving us your art and creativity -- I can't wait to see what you guys will do next. Come back to the Bay Area as soon as you can.

Hey i Love you guys soooo much me and my friend want to see you guys so badly. You guys r AMAZING please come to Manassas Virginia or DC

I don't even know if you will get this message... hopefully you do because it took me a million hoops to jump through just to sign on to this site and contact you. Anyway, I wanted to let you know how proud of you I am. I just saw you on Regis and Kelly this morning and couldn't believe how successful you have become.

I just wanted to apologize profusely for my horribly, embarrassingly pathetic school... I'm a Georgia Tech alum and went back for your concert there last night. You guys were amazing (as always - I also saw you a couple years back when you came to the Tabernacle) and I can't believe you went so far as to play different music in efforts to appease the awfully lame crowd. The concerts organized by the school are pretty much set up to be negative fun (the seating, no alcohol, etc.), and it doesn't help that 75% of the GT student body is just uncool, period (hopefully you were warned of that before you came). When you thanked us for "being tolerant," I was absolutely mortified, as were all my friends, who were also there to see you (and not O.A.R.). So I just wanted to say that I'm sorry but I'm so happy to have gotten to see y'all again! Please come back to Atlanta!!!

P.S. All of you are hot.

Hey Dan,

We went to Earl Warren and TP and played hockey together. Glad to hear you're doing great things. Love Augustana's music and definitely have Dust and Boston in my regular work music rotation. You can expect me at your next show in DC.

Couldn't agree with you more about the magic of local record stores, especially Lou's. I remember seeing Jack Johnson play CD release concerts there, sandwiched in the tiny parking between the new and used record stores with hundreds of adoring fans. You just feel like a bigger music fan when you shop at a place like that.

I'm having a tough time switching over to buying music on i-tunes. While I know purchasing the mp3s is the environmentally friendly option, you lose so much of the novelty of battling to get off the saran wrap, holding the CD in your hand, and reading the inserts. But I guess each generation of music lovers has a similar struggle.

much love,

Viraf

I've seen you guys in Omaha a couple years ago with the Goo Goo Dolls...and I have to say it was the best night of my life. Your music gets me by everyday. Any chance of a return to Omaha? :]

Hi! I love your music and I would like to see you in Spain ^___^

I hope you come soon =)

i just want to say that i totally agree, and that this is another example of why i, and so many other fans, love you.
you aren't fake at all, which is just really cool.

ok, it's probably a lot to ask (coz very few people in holland know yous) but anyway, you should come to holland. more people around the whole world should be able to enjoy your amazing music. all the americans going to your shows are just so bloody lucky! so come to holland soon (especially tilburg)

I think your CDS are Awesome! My fave band!, Once you have toured the USA, you should deffo come to the UK and rock out especially LEEDS.

Timothy

Any info on the show in Portland on Nov 13? Club says it's canceled?

Sad

Your song is still echoing in my head, even in my sleep.

Good luck!

You guyz totally rocked my world Smiling The show wuz ahhmazing but the reason i really and absolutely loved it wuz because the grand opera house iznt made for concerts and it caused a lot of technical difficulties...during the problems, yall were able to smile and laugh about it and it made me look at yall as people rather than a really great band. i laughed a lot but it wuz the best performance by far ♥

btw:i caught justin's drum stick and his sexiness blows my mind ♥ !!

come back to MAC-TOWN as soon as yall can!!!

Hey

Great voice! Awsome Lyrics! ☺

Dan-

I just wanted to let you know that you are being impersonated on MySpace. I'm sure this isn't the first time, but this guy is really giving you guys a bad rep. He is just a jerk that is using your cute face and beautiful voice to get attention. I find that to be particularly revolting. If you are interested in finding him on MySpace (and hopefully getting him removed) he currently goes by the name of The Real Boondock Saint. I am going to try and contact the MySpace people to get rid of him... but we will see how that goes.

Anyway, I just thought you ought to know...

Hope you are doing well and having fun Smiling

Jen

NYC

Granted this is a few months after you posted~ but next time y'all are in nyc, head downtown to Bleecker Street. There's a bunch of independent record stores on the row (Bleecker Street Records for one) that not only have great selections in cds, but the walls are shrines to albums of the past that are all up for grabs. Spending hours in the basements of these places, it's amazing the s*** you can find that you weren't looking for in the first place.

thanks for creating tunes worth searching for...
